[DeTomaso] Instrument panel (brighter bulbs) dash...

In my 71 Mach 1 the blue lenses for the instrument lights made it very hard to see much of any light until it got really dark. With the dimmer full on I could just barely see the instruments.

In my 1971 Mach I, I used to run the dimmer all the way down till it clicked off. I'd then click it back on and it at just the right setting, the lowest. It was just enough driving on those back roads when I was a kid. In the Pantera, I can't seem to get them bright enough for regular night time driving.

In the Mach I, I think there is something about how the light is filtered against the instrument faces vs how it's done in the instruments on the Pantera. I just need to get brighter bulbs but I want to make sure I have dimmer capability.

I find that modern cars, at least our 2010 golf, can't be dimmed low enough for my taste. It has always been on the lowest setting and I would prefer it being even lower.

I used to run it on full blast but a colleague I had mentioned that he had been a radar operator when doing his military service, and they work in dark rooms, with the brightness of the screens turned way down, to take advantage of the eyes peripheral sensitivity. He had complained about his new car not allowing the brightness being turned down low enough. I tested turning the brightness down and I now much prefer it being dark.

Saab even had their "dark panel", where only the speedo was lit as long as all the other gauges were showing nominal values. They would lit up only when needed. Really cool and they claimed it was from their fighter jet legacy.

Oddly, what is next to impossible to find is the stock-style 2w bulbs.

I went through my car and upgraded all the bulbs to the 5w style (the small gauges use the same bulbs as the larger ones). I then found that one of the small gauges (ammeter I think) was much brighter than the others, so I opened it up and retrofitted the original 2w bulb there. Now they are all the same, and just as bright as they need to be, no brighter.

Cars have dimmer switches on the instrument lights because bright interior lights is NOT what you want on a dark road. Driving in the city, with bright lights all around, yes. But when you are in the middle of nowhere, you need to dim your interior lights so that you aren't blinding yourself and compromising your night vision and your ability to see properly outside.
