Chris,

Another possiblity:

Several cars in England have suffered from the same type of problem you 
describe.   The cause was found to be the two bearings in the ZF gearbox that 
the clutch fork pivots on.

These roller bearings are supposed to be greased, and protected from the 
elements by a cover on one side (#1002) and a seal on the other side (#1009).  
 However, if these fail and moisture gets in there, the bearings will rust. 
  When they do, they dramatically interfere with smooth clutch operation.

Servicing them would require removing the gearbox (I assume).
