As I understand it, as explained by the "mad genius" who taught me the trick many many years ago, the elevated temperature makes the air trapped in the bearings expand and leak out past the seals. The subsequent cooling causes the air to contract again creating a minor low pressure/vacuum inside the bearing cavity which draws the oil past the seal into the bearing. Several temperature cycles may be beneficial. 

As for heating the oil to smoking, that's probably Doug's need to play with fire, or at least stink up his kitchen to the point his wife won't let him back in there......... LOL.

Creative approach. I suspect the benefit of the hot oil bath is to 
reduce it's viscosity and facilitate flow into the needle bearings. That 
said, there can be little benefit boiling the oil to the point of 
smoking as you are damaging the oil at that temp. Seems you may get a 
better benefit by bringing the temp up to 250 degrees and no hotter. It 
will still flow like water at that temp.
