IMHO the only way to be safe and sure is to measure the particular car in
question.

This link contains the directions I used. *Back space and off set. *
Some vendors will even send you a test wheel with the back space and offset
you provide.

     A A A A A A Subject: Re: [DeTomaso] 17-inch wheel back spacing
     A A A A A A Let me explain further.
     A A A A A A The 5.25" back spacing for the stock 8x15 should
     directly apply
     A A A to the
     A A A A A A 8x17
     A A A A A A for the front. A Wheel diameter doesn't affect where
     the edges
     A A A of the
     A A A A A A tire
     A A A A A A are for a given tire width and outer tire diameter. A
     For a
     A A A stock bodied
     A A A A A A Pantera that has had its spacers removed, you can't go
     any
     A A A crazier than
     A A A A A A a
     A A A A A A 245mm wide tire on the front and sometimes you have to
     drop
     A A A back to 235
     A A A A A A or
     A A A A A A 225 depending on the particular car.
     A A A A A A At the rear, if you put 1/2 the additional 1" wider
     wheel width
     A A A on each
     A A A A A A side
     A A A A A A of the wheel, all you'll get is a wider tire section
     width near
     A A A the rim
     A A A A A A with
     A A A A A A the same section width at the crown of the tread. A
     For an 11"
     A A A wheel vs
     A A A A A A the
     A A A A A A 10" Campy, a 5.75" back spacing achieves this because
     it is the
     A A A stock
     A A A A A A 10"
     A A A A A A wide Campy's 5.25" backspace + 1/2 the additional
     wheel width.
     A A A A The
     A A A A A A tire
A A A A A A center remains at the same point on the car with
     either the
     A A A stock 8x15
     A A A A A A Campy
     A A A A A A or the 8x17. A What could be a safer choice that this?
