[DeTomaso] Insurance for Track Events

Chuck,
My sister was married to a State Farm agent, so our entire family, my
parents, my brother, and I all had everything covered with State Farm. That
was five houses, 10 cars, two boats, lives, umbrellas, jewelry, etc. In the
1990s and seven years after I joined the "family plan" and after having
NEVER made a single claim, I received a letter from State Farm saying they
would no longer insure my Pantera. I reminded them that my brother-in-law
was my agent, and I had three cars, two houses, and a boat, and other stuff
insured with them. I said I'd have to move all of my business and would
encourage my family to do the same if they dropped the Pantera. They said,
"Have a nice day."
I was (still am) an Air Force reservist, so a friend at my unit suggested
USAA. I've seen paid one-third of what State Farm was charging me across
the board. USAA's underwriter for "hobby" cars is American Collectors.
I've never broached the racing thing with them, but I have 2,500 mile limit.
The year I drove to the POCA Rally in Vegas, I called about paying for more
milagethe trip was going to be more than 2,500 miles by itself. They said
no problem because it was a Pantera event, and no charge. On the way back,
a rock from a truck broke my windshield, so I made a claim figuring I was
going to get slammed. No change in rate the next year. State Farm did me a
huge favor.

Dear Kirby,
I feel your pain and aggravation. A similar story:
Decades ago, I was shopping for Pantera insurance. I called Farmer's
or State Farm or Allstate. I told them that I wanted to insure a
sports car.
The young man asked me some questions and asked the
make and model of the car.
I told him, "a 1974 DeTomaso Pantera."
He said that it would take a moment to look it up.
There was a dramatic long silence. He came back and said, "Sir, that
car is on our forbidden list. I can't help you."
I have long remembered the color and honesty of that
guy: "That car is on our forbidden list"!
Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Geico used to hound me continuously for years. I told them they

They kept insisting they could.
So.... one day when they called I said OK, let's go for it! A I have
three cars for you to insure!
Great! What's the first car?
1971 Detomaso Pantera.
Long silence.
Please hold.
OK, I said.
A few minutes later, she came back and said... sorry, sir. We can't
help you.
Yes, you stupid bunch of idiots! That's what I've been trying to tell
you!
Now stop calling me! No problem, sir.
Then I moved house and they're hounding me again.
OK, I'm done with my rant.
No, wait! And when people have whacked my wife's car and they are at
fault, guess who gives you the biggest hassle to get money for the
repairs?
Yep, Geico, Progressive, etal.
OK, now I'm done.
Have a nice day, Chuck!
