ALL of the usual Pantera parts vendors rebuild steering racks if you bring
them your car. Most are local to S. CA and all do mail-order. Some have an
exchange program where you bring your rack in and they hand you a rebuilt
assembly ready to go.
But a 'rebuilt' rack means different things to different people. The right
side support bushing ordinarily needs replacement with bronze, and often the
boots and the boot clamps need replacing. Some shops also replace the
pinion gear seal and a few will adjust the pinion shimming for wear.
Total teardown to find cracked or missing springs in the end of the rack
gear or chipped rack-teeth, plus adjusting the steering rod spring tension is
done by a few shops. Filling the rebuilt assembly with the proper amount of
90-wt gear oil is the last step. If the boots, clamps and seals are good,
the assembly should not leak a drop on your way home for installation. They
also ordinarily stock replacement tie rod ends. Call around. Good luck- J
