[DeTomaso] starter electrical system problem

The initial description sounds like a bad firewall solenoid to me too. 
They can get so much corrosion from the arcing inside that they finally
just don't make proper contact.  Been there, done that; eventually tore
the thing apart to find the contactor disk was basically gone and could
not longer make contact.  It's an inexpensive part, just replace it first.
