[DeTomaso] Fifth Gear Change?

Steve Wilkinson once told me he had the lower ratio final drive in for a while then took it out again.

If I had my box apart I would put in the lower ratio 5th.
But I did hear that it has to be set up exactly right, so it is not a DIY job unless you know a lot about transaxles.

My opinion is a carbon copy of Charlie's. When opportunity knocks, open the
 door.

Guys,

I'm sure it's been discussed. I searched on both forums for info and read
a lot of responses.

I have the ability and opportunity to change my ZF fifth gear from the
standard 0.704 ratio to a 0.62 ratio for about the cost of the gear set, some
shipping, and a good amount of my time. The gear set goes for about $1300
to $1500, depending upon where you get it. I have the tool part covered.

Dennis Q. says that half his rebuilds also include changing out fifth. I
think $1300 for a gear set is pretty steep but I wouldn't expect any less
from such an expensive transaxle.

Should I do it? It wasn't in the plan but has presented itself
nonetheless. It may involve waiting several months as my budget isn't
unlimited.
