[DeTomaso] New Lift

Spot on Doug - the room around the lift just feels so much more open. And,
well, it is.

The track farthest from the lift post goes down about a half inch when I
pull a 3,000 pound car onto it. At rest, on the floor, the far track is
about an inch off the floor - but the ramps that come with it make that not
a problem. And, just now I went down and pushed on one corner - I can get
it to move perhaps a quarter of an inch at the end of the ramp if I push,
pull, push, pull - but overall feels very solid.

One of the accessories is a jack tray - it fits between the tracks and
slides on Teflon pads. Haven't used it yet, but it is plenty stout. But,
flip side, if I did it over I would likely just use a 2 x 12 that fits
between the ramps. Ditto on the plastic oil pans - would use pieces of
plywood with cardboard on top to catch any oil drips.

Speaking of lifting wheels - years ago I remember an alignment shop that had
some pretty nifty and short air-jacks that they used to lift cars on their
ramp. Have looked on line and haven't seen anything as nice as I remember.
Do any of you know of such a jack?

Have you noticed any flex or sag with this lift? I take it you went with
this style mostly for the free space you end up with compared to a 4 post
hoist. Nice looking unit though. Are there any provisions for raising the
wheels off the ramps when car is in air?

When we bought 5332 my wife agreed it was time to do something about fitting
all the cars in the garage. The perfect reason to finally get a lift -
improve parking space and, well, make it so much easier to fix things on
cars. I decided to go with a single-post lift from Gemini after reading
comments from various folks on this forum. And am very pleased with the
lift now that it is installed. It truly maximizes available floor space.
And, while a bit daunting at first, it was not that bad to put all the
pieces together, even though several were very heavy. In fact, with the aid
of an engine hoist, a bottle jack, a floor jack and several 4 wheel dollies,
I was able to assemble it by myself in perhaps 20 hours.

Check out the photo's here: The

Next step is to pull the engine and figure out why it smokes on start-up.
Consensus locally is that the guy who put in the cam didn't make provisions
in the head for the increased lift and likely trashed the valve-stem seals.
More anon.
