[DeTomaso] Air Cleaner

Several of Vizard's books have data on power tests with K&N filters.
K&N's website has info on SAE filtering tests run by an independent
lab. Bobs-the-oil-guy's website has (or had) a link with filtration
tests of a variety of air filter types (paper, foam, cotton-guaze, etc.).
The results suggest that paper filters best, followed by the K&N, with
foam filters the worst. None of the filters were perfect and I was
somewhat surprised to see the K&N filters were as close to the paper
filters as they were. Note that any filter (paper or oiled cotton gauze)
has worse filtering until dirt loaded.

A guy I know dyno tested 14" diameter (2 and 3 inch tall) air filters on his
SBF drag race engine. When clean, the best of the pleated paper air filters
(Motorcraft FA-41. Wix) made the same power as a K&N. Most of the paper
filters (AC 212, Fram, Purolator) were down about 5 HP. No air filter at
all was worth 18 HP on his engine.

In practice, I believe K&N's filter well enough, assuming you do regular oil
changes. I've owned a 1987 Mustang GT since new and it's run the same
K&N filter (pleated panel type filter in stock location with intake silencer
removed) for most of its life. Many years ago, at 163,000 miles, I pulled
the 5.0L HO V8 out of the Mustang. It still ran fine, held good oil pressure
and got good gas mileage but I figured it was time for a look-see inside.
After 163,000 miles, the engine had no discernable wear. Block, pistons,
crank, cam, and lifters are all within the factory manual tolerance for
*new* parts. No ridge whatsoever on the cylinder walls. The factory
cross hatch hone was still present on the bores. Cam bearings were on the
tight side. For the first 40K miles I ran conventional oil with 3000 mile
changes, after that I switched to synthetic oil at 5000 mile changes.
The engine has over 225K miles on it now with the stock pistons, rods,
cranks, block, cam etc. and still holds excellent oil pressure.

I believe a paper air filter of sufficient surface area would filter better
than a K&N but my single data point (as well as those of friends who have
been running them since the 1970's) indicates the K&N filters acceptably
well, providing you perform regular oil changes.

YMMV,
Dan Jones
