Thanks for the replies.  I'll have to take a look for that pin--I seem to
remember the needle going all the way down before I played with the
transmission-end of the cable yesterday.  I have a cruise control module,
and the square pin slipped a bit out of position and extended too far into
the module to make it work correctly.  I shortened the pin and flattened out
the middle a bit so the little "stop" wouldn't let the pin slide into the
module again.  
I'll report back once I get home from work and check it out.
