[DeTomaso] Air Cleaner

On the BMW forums the feeling is that K+N filters do not filter as well as paper and that the engines seem to wear out sooner.

Somewhere I read an article saying the surface area of the filter is more important than the material, but I'm sure that is only true within limits.

Foam filters also burn merrily when the engine backfires and ignites the fuel
apors therin. British guys like them for reasons of tradition, but most
mericans are rather more averse to engine fires.
K&N advertising claims their filters flow drastically more air than foam
ilters, and I believe it. Whether they filter dirt as well, I don't know...

Both are readily available in the U.S.A. http://itgfilters.net/ and
ttp://www.pipercrossusa.com/

I was always led to believe that foam filters have a better airflow (lower
elta P) at higher cleaning efficiency/higher particulate load up. Look at most
intage racecars running ITB's or carbs and the largest proportion will have one
f these style foam filters. I run a Pipercross filter on the Formula Atlantic
sing twin DCOE Webers. When compared to the K&N sandwiched between two plates
he open filter area is significantly larger and you don't have a blank sat
ight over your carb/throttle body inlet.

Probably not the scientific justification you were looking for I know.

And here I was sitting and wondering why I'd never heard of either company.
 Both British!
 I should have known, Julian!
 :-)

Do you have personal experience with how/why they are better than K&N, for
xample?

 Just wondering...

I like the IPSCO offering, but when I do mine I'm going to go with an ITG or
ipercross foam filter system.
