[DeTomaso] Speedo cable question

It's been a while since I replaced my speedo cable and as of a few days ago, it comes to rest at the ten mile-per-hour mark instead of zero.  Other than that it seems OK, but I'm wondering if the grease inside the cable sheath may be hardening, and if I should squirt some penetrating oil down inside the sheath to loosen things up a bit.

I don't want to use we-40 because I'm not convinced it will last very long in that environment.

What do you all think?
