We always used foam on the race cars, most racers do., it flows better.
The only downside comes with sidedraft webers, if the car burps fuel and
backfires through the carbs, you get a real nice fire that even when
contained quickly, leaves a super sticky gooey mess to clean up at best, at
worst, your car burns to the ground. I have experienced the former and
witnessed the latter at least twice.
