Dear Stephen,

Heck, if the engine was as expected, then you'd be rather bored.
Now, with the facesmack of reality, you get to enjoy all the challenges and
fun of correcting the problems and *improving* the engine to *your*
satisfaction.

There is a silver lining to engine problems, Chuck Engles

Well, good news is lots of you kind souls took the time to help out one more
time on my e-brake questions. Turns out I will likely not touch the tranny
- thought I had a good and tight cap on the tranny vent when I set I up on
end and then started seeing oil below the bell housing. Nope, not tight
enough - input shaft is dry and will hopefully stay that way.

Engine is apart - what was said to be a virgin motor with just a cam
replaced in fact has 0.030 over pistons, poor balance work, funky wear on
the rod bearings, and gobs of silicone hanging on the inside of the air
passages where someone tried to seal leaks around the manifold. And two wet
oily combustion chambers where something is leaking. All on a 38K miles
engine.

None the less, since I planned to replace pistons and rods, all will work.
Just a little sad it is already 0.030 over. Since my goal is a driver with a
bullet proof engine will likely go with aluminum heads along with everything
else to allow a little bit higher compression ratio. Oh the fun

Do the emergency brake cables rub on the bottom of the pan if the engine
mounts are new?

>>>They rub all the time, particularly if a larger aftermarket pan is
fitted. There are folded steel clips on the chassis that hold the cables up
off the ground; by design of the cable routing, they necessarily rest
against the bottom of the pan.

>I have decided to pull the engine on 5332 and remove the current cam so

can get back to a smoother idle and deceleration. And to fix whatever is
making the engine smoke on one side - likely the result of putting in a
high-lift cam with no attention to the heads. Will know for sure in a week
or so when the engine is in lots of little pieces.

>>>Sounds like fun!

>I assume that since the trans is out I should replace the front and
half-shaft seals - are these standard oil seals or something special that
has to be gotten from a special vendor. If so, any recommendations?

>>>I wouldn't touch the seals unless they were leaking? There are
>>>various
suppliers for the seals--pick your favorite Pantera vendor, or Lloyd
Butfoy....
