[DeTomaso] Exporting Cars

Yep, the more I think about it, the more I realize I don't want to be part
of international fraud, so I guess I'll just let that one go. It just seems
a little strict of a rule for a forty year old car to me. But, hey what do
I know!

I have sold a lot of cars and I have always sold them " as is where is" FOB
is a condition of business contracts that usually fever to goods involved in
export / import and are included in the terms of the contract. Personaly I
would not recommend attempting to add anything to the car in question ( like
number plates or stamping a number on the block) the seller would be opening
himself up to charges of fraud which is criminal as well as civil damages if
the buyer suffered a financial loss as a result of the sellers actions. If (
and it's a BIG IF) this had not all been discussed on an Internet forum it
might be possible to pull it off ( but I still wouldn't advise it because it
is inherently dishonest) but now that it has been discussed on the Internet
it is an indelible part of history and the record of discussing the changed
engine as well as ways to circumvent the problems with the Chilean
government's regulations is part of that record. It is doomed to failure and
consequences far worse the losing a sale of a Pantera. Why not try to broker
a sale of a Pantera that meets the Chilean G overn ment' conditions ( there
are certainly enough Panteras for sale) and make a fee for making the deal.
the seller would profit, he wouldn't be breaking any laws or moral codes and
he would still have his Pantera to sell to another buyer. As we used to say
in the retail car biz " there's an ass for every seat".

Yep. It's called FOB. I used to think it meant "Freight On Board" but
after lookup;

"Designation of the passing of risk of loss of goods from seller to buyer.

Free on Board (FOB) indicates that the seller is responsible for getting the
goods onto a ship designated by the buyer. At this point, the risk of loss
passes from the seller to the buyer."

Surely the car would be sold ponit of sale and the new owner responsible for
transport, duties etc. Once it's gone from your hands (only after payment in
full) it is not your problem if the Chilean Government deem it inadmissible.

That was my thought too. I don't have a Motor # Plate and there is no #
stamped on the block, so what's to stop me from buying the plate from a
vendor and stamping both the same? It's not like they can check the records
of De Tomaso.
I suppose there is always the risk that the Chilean government does not
allow it in the country. Then I'd be stuck having to get it back here and
pay for all the expenses to get it there and back plus fees, plus taxes
plus........... That would suck! I may run it by the buyer and see what he
thinks anyway.

I have never heard this before.
I'm looking at your registry entry right now, and I don't even see an id
plate wearing the block number. (Your foot box plate does not show, nor
does the block number plate that is usually in the engine bay, on the left
side.)
So..... Just how would the Chilean authorities even know?
While the registry used to have a car registered in Chile, I think it
moved... otherwise the owner would be a good 2nd opinion.

I have been trying to sell my car to a person who lives in Chile. We got to
the point where he was about to transfer the money, but he wanted to check
with his government to make sure he had everything covered. Anyway, now he
tells me that they will not allow him to import the car because the engine
is not original and therefore the numbers don't match. Anyone ever come
across this when selling a car overseas?

Thanks,
Ian
