>>>Indeed. I must say I'm appalled that a Pantera professional wouldn't
understand the importance of using a 351C thermostat when you have a standard
351C water pump.
I spoke with a different vendor (who shall remain nameless) in very strong
terms when I received a water pipe/hose kit on behalf of an unsuspecting
European buyer. He had included a 351W thermostat instead of 351C. I called
to find out WTF? He said he doesn't bother selling 351C thermostats
because they are 'too hard to find'. I tried to explain that not running a 351C
thermostat would cause overheating (and proper 351C thermostats cost the
same and are available anywhere).
His response? "Ah, Panteras always overheat anyway--even if you put a big
radiator in the front you can never really get them to cool right".
Well, DUH!? Of course not, if you've handicapped it with a 351W
thermostat!!!! He still didn't get it.
I have since laid in a stock of proper RobertShaw 351C thermostats, and
when somebody buys a water pipe/hose kit from that guy, when it gets here, I
pull out the 351W thermostat (that he still includes) and replace it with a
proper 351C unit.
Tara at Hall Pantera was doing the same thing, but to her eternal credit,
when I explained why that was a bad thing, she was very thankful, and
promised to switch to using 351C thermostats right away--the next time a hose/pipe
kit from Hall arrived, sure enough, it had the right one included.
It was still a cheap Stant unit though, and as a matter of principle I
substituted a RobertShaw example after conferring with the buyer. Call me
superstitious, but after having suffered two breakdowns in my life due to
thermostat failure (in non-351C applications), I have become somewhat of a fanatic
about getting the best quality unit you can.
