Julian - I support your thinking.  Along those lines, I believe it is 
easier to sell your significant other on the lower initial outlay as few 
have any real insight as to the forthcoming cost of restoration.  Most 
people with whom I have discussed the financial cost of their 
restorations are not even honest with themselves. They avoid adding up 
the receipts for fear of depression.
