[DeTomaso] Front mount A/C

Mike Dailey documented his successful efforts to get his rear mounted condenser to produce below freezing vent temperatures in the muggy Atlanta heat. He stated the secret was getting a high density condenser.

I was struggling to get my A/C (with rear condenser and stock fan) to work at temps above 90 deg and determined that the small aftermarket condenser that came with my car was not capable of shedding enough heat from the system causing the high pressure cut off switch to shut down the condenser. After consulting with Mike, and others with rear mounted condensers, that claimed they were getting 32 deg air at the vents at highway speeds, I bought one of the four row condensers from Classic Condenser Specialists (they sell on eBay).

After installing the condenser and recharging with R-12 I was seeing 15 - 20 deg vent air at highway speeds on a 83 degree sunny day. Unfortunately the really hot weather season had past by the time I got the condenser installed so I'll have to wait to see how it handles 90+ deg heat, but I'm optimistic that I'll get comfortable air temps.

With all that said, I can see where a front mounted condenser could me more effective since you could increase its size and the air flow would be better. The most important difference (to me) would be that you would eliminate the problem of a rear mounted condenser fan blowing dust and crap all over the engine and engine bay.

Subject: [DeTomaso] Front mount A/C

Guys,

I have another potential buyer for my Pantera, this time in the UK. The sticking point right now is that the car currently has no A/C installed and he would like to have it. So, I am trying to get him an estimate on parts cost and have come across the issue of front or rear mount systems.

Essentially, my car is stripped of any A/C parts. All I have is the rear fan and shroud and the stock evaporator installed under the dash. So, my question is; if you were to install a system in your Pantera, which way would you go, front or rear mount?

It would seem to me that a front mount system would be much cleaner looking, especially since my engine bay is highly detailed, but I don’t know if there is a bunch of cutting and hacking or any modifications that need to be done to install it.

I do have a Fluidyne radiator with dual Spall sucker fans installed in the laid forward position.

Any opinions would help.

Thanks,
Ian
