Today, May 21, is the birthday of the speed limit. On this day in 1901,
Connecticut became the first state to regulate the speed of motor vehicles
(12 mph city, 15 mph country). There had been speed limits for wagons since
1652 and a speeding ticket was awarded to a New York City cab driver in an
electric vehicle in 1899. Soon, many states followed suit, though the last
state to put in a speed limit did so more than 30 years later. Another
