If you are a technophile, there is always APRS ham radio. It has no
monthly fee but you do need a ham license (easy these days), and compact
equipment that costs several hundred dollars. Look at all the people
transmitting worldwide:

Speed, temperature, lat/lon/altitude of every equipped Pantera on the
planet is possible (with crazy amount of detail) like this:

Here is a playing card sized transmitter with a gentle learning curve:

It does need an antenna for the 10 watt transmitter. Smartphones have
eclipsed alot of the ham world but APRS is great for this niche of live
roll-your-own free mobile tracking.
