[DeTomaso] What Do You Tell People - It is a DeTomaso

Is a Lamborghini Diablo considered a Chrysler?

Is the Maserati Bora a Detomaso Bora?

Calling it a Ford is not correct.

Funding a factory does not mean you have produced a car. And what about the cars made after said factory was shutdown?

Well referring to it as a Ford could be considered correct since Ford owned the manufacturing facility.

What I believe our marque suffers from is the way WE talk about our cars.

When the anyone sees a Ferrari they USUALLY do not say "Oh look there goes a 355!". The same goes for Jaguar, BMW, Mercedes, Maserati, Lamborghini, et al.

BUT for most (not all) we sell ourselves as PANTERA owners. So, then people say, "It is a Pantera" What is that? Well, most people of age, in North America think it is a Ford because it was sold at L-M dealers. Europeans and others know it as a DeTomaso. Which links very much to what was discussed on the Ferrarichat forum. It was not that the DeTomaso cars were that much different in N.A. than Europe, (eg. N.A. Bora, 308, 328, Mercedes et al were also different in N.A. in their day as well), it is that they were sold at Ford dealers and people perceived them as linked to Ford. Whereas, as I say, everywhere else in the world they were seen as DeTomaso's. Hence the cars command higher prices everywhere else but in N.A.

So, my simple answer to what to tell people is - It is a DeTomaso, just like a Mangusta, Vallelunga, Longchamp, ...etc. When we start referring to our cars as DeTomaso's first and the model second, it may start to put the record straight. i.e. just like Ferrari, BMW, Jaguar, Aston-Martin, ... we talk about the marque first then the model - no confusion.

Bohdan G.

P.S. This has been a pet bitch of mine since I bought my car in 1990 - WE are the worst to blame - As long as we are not clear on what marque we have

I say "It's an international car-- it was made in Italy using a German ZF transaxle and American Ford Engine"

This is related to some recent discussion on another exotic car forum.

The topic was the history, heritage, and perception of Detomaso cars.

One interesting subject brought up was the level of knowledge of Detomaso owners
and how/if any of that was being shared with spectators or onlookers.

Case in point...I pulled into a local weekend Cars and Coffee. As some people
looked at the car, one commented with something to the effect of ..."cool, it's
an American Countach..."

It just so happened that I had known this person for many years and because of
that I gave him a 30 minute lecture.

Although I am *FAR* from an expert on any car history, I took the opportunity to
explain the background of the company and the car.

This conversation triggered more discussion with other people in the crowd who
had no idea and thought it was something it clearly wasn't.

I've also recently met Detomaso owners who do not know much about their car.

Everyone enjoys their car in different ways. Maybe some don't really care what
it is or who made it.

I accept that. My dad had a car that he drove three times in 15 yrs yet told me
he enjoyed just looking at it.

Out of pure curiosity...when someone walks up and looks at your Pantera with a
comment similar to "cool, it's an American Countach..."

What do you respond with?

I found all the Hunters episodes are on Hulu.com. There are seven seasons of
episodes, so it's a matter of finding the right one. I took an educated guess
and am watching episode 7 from season 2 based on the IMCD database showing
episode 2.07. It's a two part episode and I'm halfway through the first one.
Nothing yet.

If anyone can zero in on the correct episode, the whole clip can be seen.
