I've found blue RTV and spray high-tack both work well in all
applications....the key, to me, seems to be to 1)  Use a high-quality
cleaner that leaves no residue before and 2) ensure you give any sealant
lots of time to cure completely before exposing it to the working fluids.

So what is the consensus on coating gaskets, like water pump & oil pump
gaskets, before installing them?

I've used Permatex High tack spray-a-gasket sealant in the past.
