It depends on what kind of grease is in there
Some time ago Jack had a summary of what greases can be used together in the newsletter.  If you mix the wrong kinds they react chemically and can create problems

Wait for Jack or someone who has that article to answer 

IIRC when I got my halfshafts from Spicer the u-joints were unlubricated and the splines had a grease on them which I removed and used RedLine synthetic grease for everything. 

I believe the RedLine grease says it is compatible with all greases, so that might be the safest bet if you don't know what kind is in the u-joints.

Would that be chassis grease? 
Or ball bearing grease? Probably not.
What does it say in the manual?
