With used ZFS, it's a total crapshoot until you pull the cover & look
closely. Dry storage allows atmospheric moisture inside to attack bearings, gear
teeth and seals as well as freezing the all-steel synchros. Only the seals &
gaskets are cheap to replace, and they take a near-complete disassembly. A
number of new, never-run ZFs from dealerships were offered for sale 20 yrs
ago and many needed complete overhauls to be useable. I've seen some
advertized as 'out of a Pantera' that were actually pulled from a crashed & burned
hulk, with case cracks and fried guts. Anything can be fixed but a total
overhaul on YOUR ZF can run $10,000 including shipping the 160 lbs to/from.
Call Lloyd for a real expert's opinion. He also stocks real ZF parts to fix
them; parts/labor costs may stop your heart. Good luck- J Deryke
