Use a vacuum gauge, highest steady vacuum, for initial setting.
And allow me to recommend my book dealing with adjusting non-stock engines:

Emne: [DeTomaso] Stroker timing
I think the best place to start if you are having issues is to time it by
ear.. they are all different and really run where they want to.. then throw
the light on it and see where you are and where you can go
My Pontiac will not hardly run below 24 initial so with advance it is way
out there... I finally locked it out at 32 and it works great
The Pantera has been timed by ear for about 4 years
411 inch dart winsor.... The water tube runs about 1/8" off of the balancer
so putting a timing marker on it was an issue.. have one on there now but
really need to check to see how close it really is Some day I will get to
it.. but it runs fairly strong I think there is a bunch more.. afraid of
breaking it on a dyno now since it has been so good so far
Bob Benson #3 Black Pantera
