[DeTomaso] Fwd: Refined Brute: 1972 De Tomaso Pantera

I brought my 2000 Porsche Boxster S to the fun rally in Arizona last year (didn't have access to a trailer for the Pantera) and put it on Firebird Raceway.  Had a GREAT time passing all the Panteras on the back curves, then getting passed again on the straights. :-)

After a hard day's racing, I was driving back to the hotel when I saw my battery light come on and started to notice some steam.  Immediately pulled over and shut it off, and lucky I did.  Apparently I had suffered the dreaded water pump pulley failure, which if not caught immediately, causes quite disastrous head warping. With the help of some fellow PCNC'ers, I was able to get the car to a local shop where they were able to make the repairs. $1000 and a return flight to AZ a week later, I was able to drive home good as new.

But, while I was at the repair shop, there was another 2000 boxster there with the engine out.  The owner was driving on Hwy 10 late at night from LA, and didn't happen to notice that his battery light had come on.  He DID warp his heads and was in the process of getting a new engine installed, to the tune of $18k! that's well over 2x the value of the car.

Disposable is 100% right.  If the engine goes, it's scrap metal...and don't get me started on the dreaded IMS bearing failures (http://www.imsretrofit.com/)...

Amen on the Porsche Boxster.  My coworker owned one and your assessment is very good.
