[DeTomaso] problem with starter and now ignition switch

Did you by any chance connect the tiny control wire on the starter mounted solenoid to the battery wire post on the solenoid and then connect it like a stock Ford starter after the stock starter relay?

That would explain the behavior and I believe several owners have suffered from this also with other starters with a starter mounted solenoid. The control wire must be connected to the starter wire from the ignition switch, possibly through a relay. It is important that it is not directly hooked to the fat battery post on the starter solenoid.
