Debris in the pan is still a good suspect.
There are other things that can leave debris in the pan - FRAM oil 
filters for instance.
A pump already damaged by pumping crap is maybe a better suspect.
If you're lucky enough to have a removable x-member,
remove the pan and the pump and clean it all up.
If the pump doesn't spin freely by hand, change it for a brand-name, 
standard-capacity pump.

If you don't have the removable x-member,
  I'd try flushing it, using the double pin and see what happens.
