Dear Will,

Thanks for the excellent "you-are-there" review of costs, mods,
fiddling and futzing with it plus the end result benefits. Full
disclosure, I would say.

                         Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Importance: High

My intake for A3 heads was $800 on ebay.

New 48 IDA carbs are about $450 each. I am going from memory, so you should
verify the price on your own. I bought mine from redline Weber.

I don't know about prices for IDF carbs, but I bet they are similar.

Linkage kits run around $150, but if I had it to do all over again, I'd ship
it to Inglese. His work is excellent, and he'll get the linkage working
perfectly. If you buy the $150 kit, you'll spend another $100 here and
there tweaking it, and it will take a long time before you are happy with
it.

Webers run lower pressure fuel, so you can either buy a Weber fuel pump for
around $150, or you can run a normal fuel pump with a regulator.

Filters are difficult to find. Hall had a nice filter, and may still have
them. I had a pair made using e-machine shop. The total was around $1,000,
plus my time.

The K/N elements are about $75 each.

Fuel lines - I did standard -6 AN, but you need the banjo fittings to fit
Webers. Figure $100-$200, depending on your stash of -6 lines.

I changed to 42 chokes (stock is 37). I haven't changed anything else.
Figure $300 or so on jets before you are happy or closer to $1000 if you
have problems tuning or if you are difficult to please. I did a lot of
research before I bought anything. I figured 427 Cobras are pretty close to
what I wanted, so I modeled mine from postings on clubcobra.com.

Cutting the deck was free. When my car was painted, the painter/restorer
made my crude cuts look like they came from the factory. He did an
excellent job. I am very happy.

Total cost is $4,000 to $5,000. The $3,000 cost does not include filters.
You can buy K/N filters for each carb, but the carbs are so close they
touch, plus I don't like the look. That's a personal thing. You might like
the look. If you use the K/N filters, you are looking at roughly
$200 for the set.

Of course, the total cost will vary depending on what you want, but don't
believe you'll spend $3,000 and be satisfied. But Webers ARE worth it.
Huge power gains down low. The biggest negative aside from the cost is they
take the mean out of the exhaust. The idle sounds much more tame.
