The cable goes bad right at the end, where it plugs into the back of the 
speedo.   It is critically important to get the housing as straight a shot at 
the back of the gauge as possible, but the architecture of the car makes it 
impossible to get it completely straight.   You just have to do your best.

You MAY be able to salvage your existing cable.   Get under there, and 
examine what the routing is going into the gauge.   Move it around as much as 
you can to straighten it out (you may need to disconnect it, pull it out, then 
reroute it under/over a wiring bundle or something).   In my case, I had 
the bouncing needle blues, and rerouting the cable helped, but the damage was 
already done, so eventually I replaced the cable, taking great care to route 
it differently, and so far, so good....
