What you describe is pretty clearly an ignition problem, unrelated to the 
carb.....

FWIW when my MSD box conked out, it did so because it wasn't mounted 
properly (it was bolted directly to the firewall without using the included rubber 
isolators, and no I didn't install it!).   The vibrations killed it.   It 
worked fine for a few years, then it started acting like yours, and then it 
quit completely.   Replacing the box (and installing it properly) fixed it.
