[DeTomaso] advice on seats

OK. I was interested in Chris brining this up, and after all I've heard,
I'm staying with my plan to get new foam and covers for my original seats, I
like em. I drove my BMW M3 to a wedding in Phoenix in April and that damn
M3 is a 30 minute car, not a 10-12 hour car. There was no way to get
comfortable. Later (Sept) in this year we made a Pantera Northwest trip to
Seattle and found the original 40 year old seats to be much more comfy. Just
my experience.

Cheers,

Your best and far cheaper bet is to find Recaros from a crashed BMW , esp
M3, a pair might be $1,000, new more like $3, 000 each. eBay usually has
them as well as new upholstery kits if you want to recover.

Which one type of car you have taken it from? or is there any vendors that
sell this?

Has anyone else noticed that all those available Corvette seats ARE
available partly because the GM owners found other seats that were more
comfortable or more attractive? One man's treat is another's poison....I
personally find stock early Pantera seats, lightly modified and repadded to
be light (for non-racing seats), comfortable on 8-hr drives for both tall
and short drivers, and attractive. Plus, they fit the car. Elimination of
the firewall bubble can not practically be done only with seat changes. But
total bubble elimination CAN be done at fairly low cost, as a few of us have
found.

I have the Corvette C4 (74 I think) seats and passenger seat does not miss
the bubble. Plus the shoddy work done on re-upholstery and they are

NOT that comfortable. I, personally, would not go that direction again. I
would like to go Recaro myself.

In all the "seat talk" - do any/all allow the passenger seat to miss the
"bubble" and go all the way back?

Chris, I would suggest getting your Recaros recovered. You already have them
and you know they fit.

They are one of the best seats out there.

I have black Momo race seats in my car since the original standard seats
were torture devices. Also, Momo was an original supplier to Detomaso and
that was part of the decision.

Fiero or Corvette seats in a Pantera? Sounds interesting but heavy...

I've seen that brand before--I might check them out. But I really like the
way the Recaros feel.

Find a dealer that has Corbeau seats. Try an LG-1. I haven't driven my car
with these seats yet, but they fit the car nicely, and they were comfortable
at the shop.

I mounted mine to the floor with Porsche 911 mounts. The Porsche has a flat
floor pan, similar to a Pantera.

I bought a pair of Sparco Milano seats covered in a fake suede (Alcantara?)
material and they fit me really well, but I had to remove the parking brake
handle to make enough room for the passenger seat.

I think a good upholstery shop can replace the padding when they recover the
seats, and inspect the frames. That seems like the best option.

Hi Everyone,

In the next 6 months or so I'm hoping to make some changes in Pandora's
seats, and I need some sage advice.

The seats in her now are Recaros--the kind that have the lower section that
can pull in or out for more leg support. They are really comfortable, and
the only improvement as far as how they feel would be a little more lumbar
support.

Nevertheless, the cloth on the seats is starting to look worn. I was
planning on having them recovered in leather, with suede down the middle,
and when I checked the pricing for that to be done (a year or two ago) I
think it was going to cost between $1200 and $1400. The seats are probably
from the '80's, and I'm afraid getting them recovered might be tantamount to
putting new wine in old wineskins, as it were. For all I know, the foam
might be just about to collapse, or the frame just about to wear out.

So, here's the question: Should I pay the money to get the current seats
recovered, or sell them and use the money towards new Recaros. I looked at
some Recaros on-line, and the prices astounded me--over $3,000 each! Still,
in trying to save money, I don't want to throw good money after bad.

Opinions will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Chris
