Dear Mark,

Thanks! I appreciate another favorable report on
the Robb 550 HP fuel pump. I also appreciate your reference to a little
know hipo part! Did you use this trick ball bearing "roller" fuel eccentric
on you rebuild? I suppose that it is ironic that the suspected culprit,
the strong fuel pump, survived the carnage to be re-used in the rebuilt
engine??

                                Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Chuck,

I've been running the Robb Mc Performance 550HP fuel pump for a few years
and couldn't be more pleased.

I don't know what the spring pressure they use and how it compares to the
stock pump but seems to be a bit stronger. This could lead to the eccentric
drive on the cam gear. I had the cam drive pin fail earlier in the year. The
base of the eccentric was bowed a bit. The end result was that the drive pin
failed and some carnage in the engine (2 broken valves). Fortunately the
block was ok and the heads needed 2 new valve seats.

At one time there was a solid eccentric made but I have not been able to
locate one. There is also a roller bearing eccentric:

ro-series-bolt/

Please be advised that the Cleveland and Windsor eccentrics are DIFFERENT.

Mark

Dear Jack,

Yes, they both list mechanical Cleveland pumps on
their websites, but they are the of the standard plain vanilla stock type.
Fine for most uses, but their gph is too modest for the planned engine.

.........My Google search shows that the only mechanical pump for a
Cleveland engine is from Robb Mc Performance. They offer two quality
units.
One supports 1100 hp and is $300! The other for lesser racers supports
550
hp and is only $200.

Google is not quite omniscent yet. Both Summit and Jegs list a 351-C
mechanical pump in their current catalogues. I haven't actually called to
check their stock, though. And a certain stock Ford electric fuel pump can
be installed in-tank with some craftsmanship. Running inside the tank as a
pusher, vapor lock is a thing of the past and in-tank pumps run very
quietly. I cannot say that about the two brands of external electric pumps
I've used in the past though!. My Ford in-tank pump has been working for 7
years now and requires zero tank mods but some work on the stock sender.

Unless there is an overlooked source or stock of unwanted and
unsold hipo
Cleveland fuel pumps out there, I will shortly be ordering a
very serious fuel pump.

Chuck,

If you would like to consider a second option you might want to look into
an electric fuel pump. Simple to install and you don't need a huge pump

either (no matter what anyone says). I installed a standard "universal"
electric fuel pump many years ago that I purchased from Autozone for
something
like $49. It is compact in size (less than 2" in diameter and 2" in
length) but feeds plenty of fuel. My engine dynoed at 540hp and it is run
quite
"spiritedly" and has no issues whatsoever with fuel starvation. Oh, the
pump is feeding a Demon 750 double pumper.

Your mileage will vary.
