Paul,
In 1965 I worked pits for Mecom Racing at the first (and last) Dome
Stadium race in Houston. I was working on the Superlite Corvette driven
by Jack Saunders and we also had a Formula Libre driven by John Henry
Kirby. The formula libre was a DeTomaso with an 1800cc Alpha engine. I
wasn't impressed by the name but I was impressed that the chassis was
also the radiator lines. The radiator was plumed into the chassis
tubing to carry the water on the right side of the car to and from the
midships mounted Alpha. We had the timing set really aggressively on the
motor and the temps were a constant problem. During the main, the upper
water line spang a leak behind the dash of the car and Kirby was able to
stand up in the cockpit at speed and guide it off the track. Like I
said it was a boutique manufacture at that time and I wasn't impressed
because it wasn't a Lotus or one of the better known open wheel cars. I
don't know if the chassis was a formula car, a formula Junior or formula V.
Have often wondered where that car went.
Working cows not cars,
Jerry Knotts
