Powdercoating is certainly a viable option, as long as it's done correctly, 
but many powdercoaters are unfamiliar with the unique characteristics of 
magnesium.   Specifically, it can out-gas, leading to bubbles under the 
finish.   The best thing to do is to have the wheels stripped, then place the bare 
wheels in the powdercoating oven at the end of the day and bring them fully 
up to temperature, and allow to cool slowly overnight.   Then powdercoat 
them the next day.
