I had the same issue and re-routed my cable a second time with as big of an arc under the dash as possible.
It eliminated about 80% of the issue.
Additionally, I drove about 25-35mph on a clear, open road and was able to reach under the dash with my left had and feel the cable...I moved it around to minimize the ticking/needle jumping and then returned to the garage where I wire-tied it to maintain (pretty closely) the optimum orientation...its about 95% smooth and is un-noticeable above about 45mph.
