[DeTomaso] stock half shafts and u-joints

Rob,

Do yours have zerks for lubrication?

Aside from cracks in the cast housing and a hard to define gritty feeling
when you spin the cap (from the bearings inside) , which means having it
out of the car,
the usual manner of finding a bad one is failure.  If you do lube it,
examine the excess lube that is forced out and see if it smells burned or
has any metal fragments in it.

They are cheap enough to warrant replacement anytime the ZF has to be
pulled ( although certainly not necessary ).

I used to replace them on my race cars each new season, just to be safe,
they were the cheapest part of the driveline.

You can elevate the car, out of gear and have spin the wheels and listen
carefully for gritty sounds, it could work, but not 100%

I have seen the big rubber donuts, don't know much about them, anybody use
them?
