There was a string a while ago on removing the speedo cable, but I'm ready
to pull the speedo and tack so I can pull the dash for recover (taking the
plunge). Do they simply pop out with help, or are they clamped in like the
smaller gages? Any tricks to removal?

>>>They are held in with exactly the same scheme as the smaller gauges--a
U-shaped clamp, and two knurled nuts designed to be operated with thumb and
forefinger and profanity in equal measures!

You can see what it looks like, here:

Be careful not to lose the nuts when you are removing/installing them.
Doing so can turn a 30-minute job into a two-hour job!
