The more I thought about it, I'm with Roger. Try the easy stuff first:
-fuel filter on
-maybe new needles
-check ground wires
Maybe drive w/o engine cover, so if it happens, you can look back and see if
fuel is coming out float bowls

Hi Charlie
I would say that your problem is definitely carb related, I would bet my
last cent that for some reason the carb is flooding, hence the black
smoke.possibly a sticking or worn float needle. Next time it does it I would
stop and just pull any plug, wou will probably see that it is very black an
