Are you ready for some Plate Geekery?
There is a car just added to the registry.. (Thanks Stefan!)

Original California plates are somewhat rare. Maybe less rare than other
states, but still rare.
Note that it carries the original (vintage correct) California license plate
of "904 PEX".
When I ran a plate search in the registry, looking for a match, I found a
car similar in color with "906 PEX".
I confirmed with the "906" owner that I have his plate correct, on an 11/73
build date car.
I've sent a note the seller of "904" asking for details. I wonder if they
were sold at the same dealer, same time.
I have a '67 with the (original) older yellow on black plate, and I know
that those plates in the format
Letter Letter Letter Number Number Number (example=UYT 321) incremented by
the number side,
so the next plate assigned was UYT 322.
I don't know for sure what the increment for the next plate format (yellow
on blue) California used
as shown on the Pantera, if the next car assigned after 904 PEX would be 905
PEX, or 904 PEY.
(Number increment or letter increment)
Does anyone know?
If the number increments then 906 PEX would be only TWO plates away, or if
it was the letter side
that increments then it is "about" 17,576 (26X26X26) plates away.
It is common for new car dealers to "batch up" their just-sold paperwork,
and submit numerous cars
at the same time to the DMV.
In this time period the California DMV would mail your plates to you, often
6 weeks later. Now, you can
walk out of the DMV with plates in hand. My father-in-law once had 6 cars
with sequential plate numbers.
Funny things was after he installed them (at least two on the wrong car), he
got pulled over.
