Now why would it say "Mfd by Carrozzeria Vignale Spa" on my vin plate
(#6791), when most others say De Tomaso?

Probably because there are roughly 13,824,000 different permutations of that
simple set of 3 digits and 3 letters (assuming I and O are not used in the
letter portion) and that format is much easier to remember and identify.
