Gary told me the theory was, the spinning rear wheel caused enough air flow thru the cooler to affect the oil temp. And the louvered splash shield protected the core from rocks. Obviously this was speed related as well. Porsche uses the same approach with their dual front water radiators, which I think have electric sucker fans. FWIW- J DeRyke
