Jack,
Indy Cars get much less mpg at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, avg. 1.92. NASCAR about 4 mpg.
Talk about sucking gas....Top Fuel car about 6 gallons per 1/4 mile = 24 gallons/mile
This year I drove to the Summer Summit, about 850-900 miles total. Interstate driving worst mileage was 18.2, best was 20.6. I was very well behaved on the 20.6 mpg run.
BTW, I have a mild cam, 750 DP.
I will try to dig up an article on acceleration & post. It is very interesting.

Bob's street Pantera has over 600 bhp. Indy cars have 800 bhp & get 3.8 mpg.
Old saying- 'Power costs money. How much do you wanna go fast?'
FWIW- J Deryke (with only 300 bhp but 20 mpg)
