The Pantera ammeter is not a classic shunt/voltage meter at  all.
 
The Pantera ammeter is a magnetic device. The workings of the  ammeter are

As a point of interest, if you can alter the readings on your  ammeter by 
adding an external wire shunt, you definitely have  some loose/corroded 
connections internal to the ammeter. The two cable  posts of the ammeter are 
connected together internally by a quite substantial  solid metal bar. An 
external wire shunt should have no significant effect  on an ammeter with good 
internal connections to the metal bar.
