 He was in fact wrenching on the left side.  The end of the wrench was hidden by the transaxle case but the very little effort that he was using to move the wrench tells me he wasn't turning anything.   TV magic.

I know that you are bored, so here's another one.  Which side of the car was the 
son on when using the big
wrench?  If it was the left side, you need a big wrench to loosen the nut that 
holds the dipstick (yes,
dipstick) for checking the fluid level in the Dash 1 ZF, which were in the PB 
cars (and '71 cars).
