Dear Asa,

Thanks for sharing those unpleasant pictures. Very
educational and enlightening. I still don't know the prime causes for a
spun bearing, however I am a definite amateur. My amateur opinion is that
for practical purposes the crank is kaput.

                        Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

For those who remember I've had an old 351C on an engine stand in my garage
because it was making some rattling noises under slight load...
I tore further into it today. The above link shows you what I found.

-Now- I know what a spun bearing sounds like. Lord knows how long it had
been that way, but a second one was on it's way as well. I couldn't tell
you why it started, but I can certainly show you the results. The number 4
rod journal on the crank is now turned -quite- a bit further than it should
be, on the thrust side. The bearings halves are nearly sharp enough to cut
meat. It's ugly.

The crank may be salvageable but it would definitely need a good turning and
it would be way undersize. Personally I think it's probably shot at this
point.

The rod and cap are also both very worn on the bearing surfaces. I'm not
sure it's salvageable or not. I imagine it can be, but it would need to be
bored oversize.

This was the very first engine rebuild I ever did. It was part of my final
project in the Automotive Technology degree program I graduated from in
1985. The engine was in my Mach I and was driven nearly every day until the
late 90's. It had a change of heads from 2V to 4V, with manifold, and a cam
change, somewhere in mid-life. When I finally put her down due to the
rattling sound, I figure she had nearly 80,000 miles on her, maybe more.

I rebuilt a different engine and made the swap in 2001. That's a whole
other story that you can probably read in the archives of this list.
After nearly 12 years, I now know what failed.

Enjoy,
Asa Jay
