[DeTomaso] third update on clutch slave not compressing fully

Thanks for your thoughts.
At this point the slave is the guilty party, so I'm going to remove it anyway. Then I'll be able to confirm what you suggest.
But it seems to me that once I have tapped the piston back in and created play in the slave-clutch lever connection and the clutch lever moves fine I have ruled out binding / seizure inside the bell housing.

For the problem to be inside the bell housing there would have to be a point at which severe binding occurred, none whatsoever short of that, and nothing of significance beyond it, as the clutch pedal is not heavy to operate.

I don't have very strong hands, and the tapping I do with my mallet is probably no more force than a strong guy could do with his hands.

But you need to disengage it all. For all you really know, unless
ou've disconnected that linkage, when you are pounding the piston back
n, you may be hammering something in the bellhousing and -not- the
lave cylinder. By disconnecting the linkage you can verify the
ellcrank lever moves smoothly when not engaging the clutch. That will
solate it from the hydraulic system.
If the bellcrank lever moves as expected, then you need to start looking
t the rest of the system, slave, master, lines in between, age of
luid, etc.
OH, and there is absolutely NO reason you should have to "hammer" the
lave piston back in. It should move smoothly by -hand-, albeit with a
ittle bit of umph. If it's more than you can move by hand... something
s wrong, you need to disconnect and isolate the individual systems.

At least on my car the slave rod is not actually attached to the piston-- it
ust has a convex end that sits in a concave depression in the piston. So I can
ush the rod perpendicular to it's axis and feel and see it moving around when
t's not under tension and play exists. When there is play the clutch arm moves
asily.

You need to suck it up and press that pin out of the bellcrank lever.
ithout being able to disengage the individual items of the system, you
 ould keep guessing for days.

Well, cracking the bleed nipple open did not cause anything to move. A
ittle
luid came out, but I still couldn't push the slave piston up. Tapping w mallet
as successful. Attaching the rather strong spring did not move the arm with
he
ipple open either. Tiny pulses of fluid exiting the nipple were seen w each
 ap of the mallet.

So it's not an hydraulic problem with the master cylinder, it's a local
inding issue. My current theory is that the slave piston is binding in the
ore. Large hydraulic pressure from the clutch pedal depression is able to move
he piston but the little return spring or my girly arm is not.

   Any other theories?

hat occurred to me too. But since the system is under pressure I won't even
eed the spring on. I suspect that when I crack the bleed nipple loose the
rm
ill move and I'll have play again. With the spring on you can't evaluate for
lay without taking it off again

   im,
ith the spring installed, try opening the slave's bleeder screw slightly to
 ee
   f the slave retracts further
.e. the stop bolt comes to rest at its stop). Also check for free play at
   e master cylinder's pushrod. The
shrod needs to be touching the retaining washer in the master cylinder. You
   n't see the forward end
the pushrod, as it's inside the master cylinder. You may have to pull the
n from the pushrod's yoke to
   eck.
