Not necessarily. New lifter on old cam is generally ok. Old lifter on new cam is not.

The ticking may also be a leaking exhaust mainfold gasket located between the head and the exhaust header. Perhaps even more likely the culprit.

=============
Hello Friends ,

A few weeks ago my car engine starting ticking on the driver side of the
engine.

I was told yesterday by a close friend that it is either an adjustment or a
 lifter is going bad . He said that if it is a lifter that I cannot just
have that lifter replaced .He also said that if the lifters are replaced that
I must do a cam at the same time .

Does this sound correct ? It also sounds like major work ?

Confused !
