Tom, a ground from the front-mounted battery to the chassis at the provided 
ground stud AND a ground from the chassis to the engine or ZF are necessary 
to allow easy starting and fewer 'odd' issues with your wiring. If both the 
stud (including the end under the dash) and the area near the engine or ZF 
are scrupulously wire-brushed before connecting your ground wires, it not 
necessary to run a heavy-gauge wire back to the starter. And all grounds are 
not equal. Due to DeTomaso's practice of 'daisy-chaining' ground connections 
in the cabin where the fiberglas dash and console complicate grounding, many 
cars have what are called 'ground loops' where instrument and switch 
grounds are not all quite at zero, causing many problems. A good VOM will allow
